BMW'S ACTIVEHYBRID 5 COMES ALIVE

BMW South Africa will start selling the ActiveHybrid 5 here in 2012. The car will mark the company’s first hybrid offering to ever hit theseshores, promising V8 performance with straight-sixfuel consumption. Hopefully we’ll be able to take a closer look at BMW’s JIMSstand if the car is on exhibit.

Powering the ActiveHybrid 5 is mainly the 3.0-litre twinturbo petrol secreting 225kW and 400Nm. Add to that the 40kW and 210Nm ushered out by the electric motor, and you have a totalsystem output of 250kW and 450Nm. It is said the car will accelerate from standstill to 100km/hin just 5.9 seconds, and an averagefuel consumption figure of 7 litres per 100km. At that level you’d be lookingat about 950km from a full tank. This isn’t one of those plug-in hybrids so youwill not be able to recharge it through the garage wall power socket.

In full hybrid mode the car will travel for about 4km at atop speed of 60km/h, making itideally suited for traffic-congestedcities like Jozi.
