VW NILS Concept

Volkswagen NILS, a single-seat electric concept vehicle that offers a glimpse of a new form of minimalist mobility, has been unveiled ahead of its public debut at the 2011 Frankfurt Motor Show. This concept car - which features an aluminium space frame, wing doors and free-standing wheels - has the dynamic performance of a sports car, yet travels silently, and with zero emissions. The NILS project is supported by the German Federal Ministry of Transport, Building and Urban Development, and is designed to be both technically realistic and economically supportable.'NILS anticipates the future. The goal of the NILS project is to research a technically realistic and economically feasible concept for a minimalist commuter vehicle that makes individual transportation more efficient and eco-friendly thanks to its electric drive,' said Prof. Dr. Jürgen Leohold, Head of Volkswagen Group Research.Commenting from the strategic perspective is Dr. Rudolf Krebs, Group Chief Officer for Electric Traction: 'In terms of the Volkswagen Group's roadmap for electric mobility, these forward-thinking vehicle concepts play an especially important role. That is because the breakthrough of electric mobility will lead to new vehicle requirements - many of which are oriented towards very specific target groups. In advancing electric mobility to high-volume production, it is not enough to simply electrify existing vehicle models.'
With a range of 65 kilometres (40 miles) and a top speed of 130 km/h (80 mph) Volkswagen NILS would be the ideal vehicle for the majority of commuters in Germany. According to the German Bureau of Statistics, 73.9 per cent of all commuters residing between Berlin and Munich cover less than 25 kilometres (15.5 miles) on their way to work.Cars have always been mirrors of their times - their design styles and technological standards reflecting a particular era - and NILS is no different. It uses emissions-reducing electric drive technology to fulfil the specific requirements of commuters. In Germany, for example, about 60 per cent of all commuters travel by car, according to the Federal Bureau of Statistics; of these over 90 per cent travel alone. Zero-emissions vehicles like NILS will offer these frequent drivers a new eco-friendly mobility solution.Volkswagen NILS is a very compact car that requires extremely little space in traffic. It is only 3.04 metres long - making it about 50 cm shorter than the new Volkswagen up! - just 0.39 metres wide from wheel to wheel, and a mere 1.2 metres tall.Volkswagen NILS has the same basic layout as a Formula 1 race car, with the driver in the middle, the engine in back, and free-standing outboard wheels. The 17-inch alloy wheels are equipped with 115/80 (front) and 125/80 (rear) tyres optimised for low rolling resistance.Though its inspiration may come from Formula 1, the styling has its origins at the Volkswagen Design Centre in Potsdam, Berlin. Designer Thomas Ingenlath, the centre's director, said: 'NILS was designed to make a visual statement and transport a vision of the automotive future to the present. I am especially pleased that we managed to implement the concept of the two glass wing doors. This allowed us to create large transparent surfaces and simultaneously to make entering and exiting the vehicle very comfortable, even in the most cramped of parking spaces.'Because Volkswagen NILS is so compact and lightweight (460 kg), it is a lot of fun to drive. It has a top speed of 130 km/h, and can accelerate to 100 km/h in less than 11 seconds. This is achieved using an electric motor with a reasonably small 15 kW nominal power and short-term peak power of 25 kW. A lithium-ion battery supplies the electric motor with energy. The battery capacity (5.3 kWh) enables driving ranges of up to 65 km, depending on the style of driving. A battery of this size is relatively inexpensive, and can be charged either via a conventional 230-volt electrical outlet (maximum charging time two hours) or at an electric vehicle charging station. The socket is located at the back underneath the rear lighting module. The centrepiece of the electric drive system is the lightweight 19 kg electric motor together with its transmission and battery. Energy management is via a high-voltage pulse inverter, which - together with the 12-Volt DC/DC converter for the vehicle electrical system and the charger - forms an integral drive unit. All drive unit components are located compactly in an aluminium housing at the rear of NILS; drive is to the rear wheels. The motor, battery and all other components are so compact that there is still space for a small but practical bootspace. The body-coloured area above the rear lighting module swings upward, revealing space suitable for items such as a case of drinks and a bag.Optimal weight distribution helps to ensure that Volkswagen NILS allows drivers not only to commute with zero emissions, but also to have fun while doing so. The lightweight NILS drives like a go-kart. The steering is purely mechanical (the low weight means power assistance is unnecessary), while the electric motor produces its maximum torque of 130 Nm from standstill, via a one-speed transmission. Suspension is by double wishbones front and rear; while ESP (Electronic Stabilisation Programme) helps to tame any over-exuberance on the part of the driver.Safety is of course even more important than fun, and NILS is fitted with an automatic distance control system. This uses radar sensors to scan the space in front of the vehicle over a distance of about 200 metres and uses brake interventions to ensure that the distance to vehicles in traffic in front of the car does not drop below a specified minimum value. The system can even automatically brake the car to a stop, depending on the situation. Not only are the four disc brakes used to brake; electric traction by electric motor and battery regeneration can be used to brake as well. Last but not least, Front Assist is integrated in the automatic distance control system. This continually active system warns the driver of a potential collision; at speeds below 30 km/h (18 mph), automatic braking can avoid a collision under some circumstances. The instrument cluster is a seven-inch TFT display. The vehicle's speed is shown digitally in the middle, while energy flow is represented by bars. Another graphic display offers information on the driving range. The second central instrument is a mobile multifunctional device like the one used in the new up!: the Portable Infotainment Device (PID). It is snapped into theA-pillar to the right of the instrument cluster. Via touchscreen, the driver controls functions related to Navigation, Radio, Media, Telephone, Trip computer and - to preconfigure the driving range - 'Eco. The PID computes the expected driving range, then it not only displays the route on the map display, but also the radius and thereby the destinations that can be reached using the current battery charge. To save on weight and costs, certain functional elements and controls do without electrical assistance. The side mirrors, for example, are adjusted manually. The heating and ventilation system has full electronic control, and there is seat heating. Located to the right of the steering column is the motor start-stop switch; this round switch is also used to select D, N or R.The aluminium space frame body was designed to be a highly effective safety cell. The body in white is produced from extruded aluminium, cast aluminium and sheet aluminium. The roof frame together with the door mounts, a roll bar, the bootspace and the front bulkhead consist of high-strength sheet aluminium. Extruded aluminium is used in the side sills, the transverse profiles and the front and rear car sections. The front and rear side body are aluminium. Parts made of high-strength plastic include the bumpers and the trim panels on the side sills. The frames of the wing doors consist of three main elements: an inner section, a crash reinforcement section and an exterior part. When closed, they offer optimal crash safety. The door windows are made of lightweight, scratch-resistant, layered polycarbonate, while the front window is made of laminated safety glass. The headlights are striking bi-xenon modules, while the indicator lights and daytime running lights are white and yellow LEDs. In the acrylic glass of the rear lights - integrated in the rear section like small wings - the light generated by LEDs is routed via transparent semiconductors which (appropriately for an electric vehicle) consume minimal amounts of power.

Maserati GranCabrio Fendi

The Maserati GranCabrio Fendi designed by Silvia Venturini Fendi was born from the union of two iconic brands of the made in Italy, which share common values such as craftsmanship and tradition.
A masterpiece of technology and craftsmanship, the Maserati GranCabrio Fendi will be introduced at the 2011 Frankfurt MotorShow.
The Maserati GranCabrio Fendi is crafted at the historical Maserati headquarters in Modena, with exclusive materials bespokely created in various colours for this project.

The three-layered body colour named Grigio Fiamma Fendi is a special dark grey with an iridescent golden finish on the surface. The wood trim Pergamena Fendi runs across the width of the dashboard, on the doors and on the top of the gear lever, all in the iconic FENDI yellow, like the brake callipers and the embroidered yellow trident on the headrests.
Adding a stronger yet elegant character to the GranCabrio is FENDI's unmistakable double F-logo, stitched on the seat, also appearing in the centre of the 19-inch Trident design alloy wheels, and the FENDI logo along the rocker panel.
Cuoio Romano, Fendi's most precious leather of its Selleria line, has been used for such details as the instrument cluster cover, for the gear lever and for the profiles of the floor mats. It also features in the Limited Edition Travel Set of luggage and accessories.
The Maserati GranCabrio Fendi represents a perfect marriage between the art of a handmade product with the ultimate technology and research of its 4.7-litre V8 engine coupled with automatic transmission, which brings out to life a unique roar, music to the ears of car connoisseurs.
Silvia Venturini Fendi's specially crafted logo seals this collaboration. A silver oval plaque with the engraving of the Maserati trident, Fendi logo and the 5-digit series number (five being an iconic number for Fendi) is located on the dashboard, in front of the passenger seat, and on both sides of the black cloth folding roof.
A special black car cover with a ton-sur-ton double F logo dresses the GranCabrio, hiding this marvellous secret from indiscreet eyes until the very last moment.

VolksWagen up

Volkswagen has redrawn the map of the small car world. The goal: to develop a small car with charisma, a small car with maximum space on a minimal footprint, a small car with the most fuel-efficient engines or an electric drive, a small car with intuitive infotainment and operating systems, a small car with the safety of a large car. The result is the new Volkswagen up! It measures a short 3.54 metres and is a specialist for everyday urban living that was thought through to the last detail. This car - like the larger Polo and the even larger Golf - will appeal to people of all ages and mobility wishes.

Affordable for everyone. In launching the up!, Volkswagen is not only putting a new car in motion; it is also redefining the parameters of customisation and financing. This means that along with clearly delineated equipment lines on the Volkswagen up!, new features will be offered such as up! boxes - e.g. box sets for shopping, long trips or for children on board. The up! will have an infotainment system that owners can tailor to their personal profiles using apps. And because a small car needs to be affordable, a new financing model known as AutoCredit2 that is exclusively tailored to VW up! buyers will offer greater financial freedom thanks to its flexible configuration options. And for many people, this will make the goal of driving a safe and economical new car more attainable than ever. Like the Beetle back in the 1950s, one could say that the Volkswagen up! is once again "democratising" car driving.
The up! will first be launched in the European market. It all starts in December 2011. There are 3 versions for different budgets and needs: take up! is the entry-level car, move up! the comfort-oriented one and high up! the top version. Directly at the car's market launch, there will also be 2 independent models based on the high up!: the up! black and the up! white.

    New generation of engines
Debuting in the Volkswagen up! is a new generation of three-cylinder petrol engines. They output 44 kW / 60 PS and 55 kW / 75 PS. Combined fuel consumption as a BlueMotion Technology version (including a Stop/Start system): 4.2 l/100 km (60 PS) and 4.3 l/100 km (75 PS). Both of these 1.0-litre engines emit less than the 100 g/km CO2 limit. A natural gas engine with 50 kW / 68 PS with the same basic configuration will follow. Its combined fuel consumption of 3.2 kg/100 km (natural gas) is equivalent to a CO2 value of 86 g/km; as a BlueMotion Technology version the natural-gas powered up! even attains a low CO2 value of 79 g/km. There are also definite plans for an up! with an electric drive for the year 2013.
First small car with City Emergency Braking
An important new safety technology system is the optional City Emergency Braking. It is automatically active at speeds under 30 km/h, and it uses a laser sensor to detect the risk of an imminent collision. Depending on the vehicle's speed and the driving situation, City Emergency Braking can reduce accident severity by initiating automatic brake interventions - and possibly even avoid a crash. So far, the VW up! is the only vehicle in the segment to be offered with an emergency braking function for city driving.
Dimensions and styling for the world's metropolitan areas
With its noted 3.54 metre length and 1.64 metre width, the Volkswagen up! is one of the smallest four-seat cars. The Volkswagen is 1.48 metres tall. Its overall length consists of conspicuously short body overhangs and a very long wheelbase (2.42 metres) - a body layout that fully utilises the space available in the new design. Klaus Bischoff, Head of Design for the Volkswagen Brand says: "If the goal is to maximise space, the ideal form for a small car would be a rectangular box. In the up! we were able to sculpt such a box with a clean and powerful design that does not lose sight of space utilisation." The front end of the VW up! reveals much about the car's character. Klaus Bischoff: "The face is unmistakably that of a genuine Volkswagen, but with a very independent personality. Naturally, the familiar styling characteristics of our brand face can also be found on the up! - the emphasis of horizontal elements and the connection of the grille and headlights to form a band, the accents created by small angles and the characteristic light signature of the headlights. But more than on any of the other models, the Volkswagen up! definitely shows a smile. The up! is simply appealing, and it appeals in a simple way!"
Uncompromisingly good use of interior space
Space utilisation in the car is exceptionally good, because of its wheelbase - one of the longest in the segment - combined with an engine that is mounted well forward. Although the driver, front passenger and 2 rear passengers are travelling in a small car, it is by no means a cramped vehicle. On the contrary. Consider the boot: 251 litres are significantly more than is typical in the vehicle class of the up! When the rear seat is fully folded, cargo space even increases to 951 litres. These two values show that in its interior the Volkswagen up! will be a giant among small cars.
An interior design that is fun
Essentially, the up! interior has a very clean and well-organised layout. The new Volkswagen also offers numerous clever and detailed solutions, fun styling and a level of quality that will enhance the market segment. Especially high-end is the Dash Pad, an instrument pad extending crosswise in front of the driver and front passenger. Depending on the equipment line, either decor paint or one of the 5 body colours is used in the interior.
VW up! boxes - small things that make a big difference
The developers of the Volkswagen up! asked themselves whether everyday living with the car could be structured in a simpler and friendlier way. Their answer was a decisive yes! Because it is often the small things that make a big difference. And that is how the idea of the up! boxes came about. Small, lightweight boxes for a wide variety of situations and needs. Take the "kid box", for example, that was designed for parents with small children; it includes a bag for the thousand small items that are essential with small children; and of course a toy to cuddle with and a lunch box for the obligatory snacks. Other Volkswagen up! boxes will be called the "city box" and the "travel box". And their names are their agendas.
maps + more - the Portable Infotainment Device (PID)
For the first time in a Volkswagen, the maps + more system is now being offered, a mobile Portable Infotainment Device (PID). In the economically priced up!, this is a system that is equally economical and was developed to organise the navigation, telephone, information and entertainment areas. In cooperation with Navigon, one of the world's leading suppliers of navigation systems, a special solution was tailored to the up! which is affordable for all buyers - maps + more. The user simply snaps the PID into place above the centre console. Unlike many other similar systems of this type, maps + more melds with the car's network of systems much better: navigation, telephone and infotainment can now be controlled and viewed via the PID touchscreen, and the touchscreen can also be used to view important vehicle information, such as the visual display of the ParkPilot (controls the car's distance to the next vehicle). Apps specially developed for the VW up! also let users extend maps + more to meet their specific needs.

    Volkswagen Beetle 2012

Wolfsburg / Shanghai / Berlin / New York – When the first Beetle rolled off the production line, it was called simply the Volkswagen — “the people’s car” — but its distinctive shape inspired nicknames across the globe: Beetle, Käfer, Vocho, Coccinelle, Fusca, Maggiolino or 甲壳虫! In total, 21.5 million cars were sold.
More than 60 years later, in 1998, the “New Beetle” rekindled the spirit and imagination of the original to a new generation of Volkswagen owners. The second generation version sparked another round of uplifting and joyous enthusiasm known as Beetle Mania.
Today, the Beetle opens a new chapter in its remarkable story. The third generation of the internationally beloved Beetle is celebrating a transcontinental world debut simultaneously in Shanghai, Berlin and New York.

    Updating an icon

Only someone who knows and respects the Beetle’s heritage could produce a new generation of this storied vehicle. The task for Volkswagen engineers was clear. They had to develop a modern interpretation of the Beetle, with all the benefits of today’s technologies and efficiencies, and the driving characteristics that define the Volkswagen brand. The result had to remain affordable and stay true to the Beetle’s spirit and great heritage.
The design of the new Beetle presented another challenge. How does one reinvent a look that is so recognizable and unique? Volkswagen Group Design Chief Walter de Silva and Volkswagen Brand Design Chief, Klaus Bischoff, welcomed the task and set an ambitious objective: “Design a new original!”
The designers wanted to develop the new car around the earliest Beetle profile rather than the 1998 New Beetle. They wanted a car that respects the past but looks toward the future. And that is what they created.
    Exterior

The 2012 Beetle is an automotive icon reinvented. Placing the original Beetle and the 21st Century Beetle next to one another, it’s clear that the lines of the rear sections are nearly identical, but the overall look is bolder and more dynamic. The Beetle also breaks free of the design geometry defined by three semi-circles (front wing, rear wing, domed roof above it).
“The Beetle is now characterized by a clean, self-confident and dominant sportiness. The car not only has a lower profile; it is also substantially wider, the front hood is longer, the front windshield is shifted further back and has a much steeper incline. All of this creates a new dynamism,” explains Klaus Bischoff.
The 2012 Beetle is 71.2 inches wide (3.3 inches wider), 58.5 inches tall (.5 inches lower) and 168.4 inches long (6 inches longer). The new focal point is the C-pillar. The development team also increased the car’s track widths and wheelbase. All of this gives the Beetle a powerful appearance with muscular tension.
Another feature is the rear spoiler that is integrated into the design (standard on 2.0L TSI engines with 200 hp). The top surface of the rear spoiler is black, while the underside is painted in body color.
The Beetle is sportier, offering both turbo-charged TDI® Clean Diesel and turbo-charged gasoline engines, in addition to dual exhaust, performance-handling packages, 19-inch wheels, sport seats and new, sleeker styling. Volkswagen will offer a panoramic roof, a range of audio options, including the Fender® Premium Audio System, and a customization program for the 2012 Beetle with a large number of personalization options, including a wide variety of colors and wraps along with an annual theme model.
    Interior

The 21st Century Beetle offers an agile, driver-oriented coupe experience with a quality of materials that goes beyond all class limits. The car’s styling, ergonomics and quality interact to create a new, friendly car with a highly individual nature.
The shape and use of color in the painted or carbon-look dashboards harkens back to the design of the first Beetle.
Three round instrument gauges are arranged in front of the driver (tachometer, speedometer, fuel gauge) providing all key information at a glance. A multifunction display is integrated in the speedometer in middle position. The steering wheel is specially designed with optional painted accents in the spokes depending on the equipment line.
Framed by two air vents, the selected audio/navigation system is optimally located in the driver’s visual field on the dashboard. Within easy reach, climate controls are situated just below.

Similar to the original Beetle, the new car has an extra glove box integrated into the dash. The lid folds upward, while the standard glove box opens downward. Another classic feature: the optional auxiliary instruments above the selected audio/navigation system: oil temperature, clock with stopwatch function and boost pressure gauge.

The “cathedral ceiling” dome roof of the New Beetle has been replaced with a sleek and sporty roofline. Front and rear passenger headroom remains plentiful. In the rear seating area, the longer roof section results in more space. The trunk is significantly larger, offering 10.9 cubic feet of space. A split-folding rear seat and a wide opening trunk lid ease loading and unloading.
    Engine and Transmission

2012 ABT Sportsline Volkswagen Tiguan

The specification book stated that the characteristics of the new Volkswagen Tiguan had to be supported. In plain talk this means that the car should have maximum reliability, enjoyable driving characteristics on almost all surfaces and agility – and the engineers at ABT have done a good job: the successful 2.0 TDI version now offers strong 170 HP/125 kW (series standard: 140 HP/103 kW) or 195 HP/143 kW (series standard: 170 HP/125 kW). With the economical turbo petrol engine with 1.4 litre cubic capacity a dynamic 210 HP (154 kW) is available instead of the standard 160 HP (118 kW). The fact that the fuel consumption does not increase as a result is a matter of course at ABT Sportsline. The sportiest Volkswagen Tiguan facelift is the one with the 2.0-TSI engine. The machinery is currently undergoing extensive testing but the technicians have already revealed that – depending on the series performance – either over 210 HP (154 kW) or as much as 250 HP (184 kW) will be reached.

2010 new volkswagen polo more muscular appearance

2010 new volkswagen polo more muscular appearance

2012 Volkswagen Beetle Review

Looking back at the beginning: the beginning of Volkswagen built one of the most successful cars of all time and not even give it a name. Why should it? After all, it was the Volkswagen! People loved it, and on all continents of the little car earned the nickname, according to exactly what he looked like: Beetle, Käfer, Vocho, Beetle, Fusca, or Maggiolino 甲壳虫! It embodies the concept of the automobile and the symbol of the democratization of mobility. 21.5 million cars were sold. So, the New Beetle arrived in 1998. He brought a sense of new cars that the world and brought with him Beetle Mania. In 2010, completed the final version of the series New Beetle that had sold over a million cars. And now? Looking to the future. Future of the most famous car in the world begins now. In a whole new generation.

This is the Beetle! And because the Volkswagen Beetle and call their home planet, the new car to celebrate a world first transcontinental - while in Shanghai, Berlin and New York.

Technological goal: high-tech harmony with the environment

Volkswagen Beetle is an icon. This car has a story. Only someone who knows his story could make a new generation of Volkswagen's reality. The task ahead for engineers has been very clear. They had to develop a high-tech car affordable yet leaves no stone unturned, integrated communication technologies of our time and, of course, achieve the lowest environmental impact. It should also be a car that areas of driving pleasure at the forefront. The new generation of the VW Beetle to be very flexible, dynamic performer, and the people who developed the Golf GTI would also be able to achieve this goal.

No previous Beetle was fuel efficient. High performance is no longer sufficient to itself: A 4.3 l/100 km (1.6 TDI European) and 33 mpg (2.0 TDI American), the new Volkswagen Beetle is the most fuel efficient Beetle story.

Design Goal: Design of a new and original! "

The automotive world's most recognizable design. bottle of Coca Cola, iPhone, Ray Ban Aviator Beetle - how do you reinvent a design that is so recognizable and independent? There is a clear answer on this: It is necessary to understand the product and brand, so it works! Volkswagen Design chief Walter de Silva (Group) and Klaus Bischoff (Brand Volkswagen) "understand" the two and therefore they set the goal to Beetle: "Designing a new and original!

Challenge with excitement. The team began its mission to guide Bischoff. Challenge of designing a new Volkswagen Beetle has been inspiring. The designers knew they wanted to develop a profile of the original Beetle than the New Beetle 1998. I am also a very dynamic priority of proportion. An interesting fact is that more than a few members of the team is owned by air-cooled beetles. It has also become a vehicle of worship for young designers, Volkswagen. And so the final draft was to be 2011 Wolfsburg Beetle - a car and now planning a tribute to the automobile industry, seed of the whole group. And in fact clear: if someone takes the first Beetle and New Beetle and put them in a room - a bit 'light shines on the roof and watch a half - could see that the lines of the back are almost identical.

    Remains: "We renovated every game."

Bolder, more dynamic, more masculine. A comparison with the New Beetle 1998 shows: Only left was the old car. "The beetle is now characterized by a sports car cleaner, safer and its not only has a lower profile, it is also considerably wider, the cover is longer, the windshield is moved back and has a much steeper slope. All this creates a new dynamism, "says Klaus Bischoff. While the New Beetle has been defined by three semicircles (front fender, rear fender, roof dome above), the new. model was released for this geometry the roofline really works much lower and can be regarded as a continuation of the concept car shown in Detroit in 2005 -. Ragster a type of race car based on the New Beetle The New Beetle is bolder, more aggressive, more masculine.

The figures confirm it: The new car is 1,808 mm wide (84 mm wider), height 1,486 mm (12 mm lower) and 4,278 mm in length (152 mm longer). This resulted in all-new proportions. The gain in length means that the roof could be extended further, the windshield can be reduced, and the back could follow the contour of the original Beetle. The new focal point is the C-pillar. At the same time, the development team has increased the car's track width and wheelbase. All this gives the appearance of VW Beetle powerful with muscle tension.

Volkswagen Beetle typical typical new DNA

2011 style. Despite all its individuality, resulting DNA Volkswagen design style created by Walter de Silva, Klaus Bischoff. expressed clearly in the horizontal image of the front bumper, front air intake, straight lines of the bonnet leading edge, just pulled from the line of demarcation between a pillar and C pillar and the rear style.

Beetle, Microbus, the original Golf. And yet, it was possible to retain all the characteristics typical Volkswagen style. This is not surprising, after all, vehicles like the Beetle, Microbus and the original golf has had a decisive influence on the DNA of Volkswagen design. "Of course, certain features of the old beetle remains: what are the round headlamps (optional bi-xenon headlights with LED daytime running lights are available for the first time in this series of models), flared fenders, the shape of the cups, sides and doorways and - more than ever - the big wheels (up to 19 inches) that can be integrated.

A new feature is the rear spoiler which is integrated into the uniform design (default for the TSI engine with 118 kW / 160 PS and 147 kW / 200 hp) and vigorously maintains contact with the road that Volkswagen, which has a speed peak up to 225 km / h, depending on the engine and is available in three equipment lines "Beetlejuice," "Design" and "Sport". In addition, the upper part of the rear wing is always black, while the underside is painted body color. These colors - 12 different colors - to make driving more alive every day with names like "Saturn Yellow" and "Blue Denim".

An original interior like no other

The cockpit makes a visual impression. Is it possible for a cockpit to make an impression? Are you kidding? By its nature! Motorists sit in the cockpit. Sometimes for hours at a time. And yet there are cars with cockpit leaves no lasting impression. They have a "look alike" appearance, which say marketing - an easily confused with another, lack of charisma. VW Beetle cockpit, on the other hand is unique, unique, cool, classic design with a passion for details. This cockpit is perceived as something special.

All hand and eyesight. Form and use of colors in the front carbon-look painted or dashboard refers to the design of the first VW Beetle, but the new car has a retro look. In Europe, for example, the dashboard saying "united Schwarz (black) on the base model (" Beetle ") in the line" Design "equipment, it is always painted in the color of exterior concrete. Customers who choose the "sport" look at the carbon ("carbon fibers"). No matter what colors are used, the Volkswagen driver would find all the functions inside, eyes closed.

And yet, everything has been redesigned. Three round instruments arranged in front of the driver (tachometer, speedometer, fuel gauge) provide important information embedded in the speedometer (position) is a multifunction display. From level "Design" equipment, it has adjustable air vents and instruments, chrome edges. This also applies to audio / navigation system optimally positioned in the driver on the dashboard, surrounded by two air holes. This includes controls on the climate control system. Everything is within reach and sight.

Return of the glove. Like the original Beetle, the new car has a glove box integrated into the dashboard extra front cover folds up (the glove box also integrates standard opens down). Another classic feature: Optional auxiliary instruments on the selected audio / navigation system, oil temperature, clock with timer and turbo pressure indicator. Also new: the steering wheel specially designed for the Volkswagen Beetle painted accents rays optional depending on the equipment line. These data clearly indicate that the occupants are in a beetle - not to be confused.

Air-cooled Beetle. New Beetle. The Beetle. A distinctive feature of the beetle - the third generation if you will - is that its interior ergonomics and packaging are based on entirely new configuration. While pilots flew air-cooled beetle in a very low seat height, and New Beetle drivers feel as if they were driver and the cover was so far away, the last Beetle Volkswagen now offers a streamlined, driver-focused coupe experience. Each device is within reach. In addition, Volkswagen has succeeded once again to implement a quality material that goes beyond all boundaries of class. The car's appearance, usability, functionality and quality interact to create a new car a friendship with a very special character.

New Beetle was a cathedral inside. Front, Beetle is now a little lower profile because of the curved roof of his predecessor have been deleted. We offer a 1044 mm Height 1082 mm instead of the previous. However, 38 mm is unlikely to intervene, even in a very long driver, as the interior New Beetle was a "cathedral" among compact cars. Meanwhile, behind the seating area, are no longer part of the roof clearly results in a larger space. And there are much higher, now has 310 and 209 liters. As usual, the car is split, folding rear seat, and the grand opening bootlid so it's easy to load and unload.

Add optional features: individualized VW Beetle

"Bubble," "Design" and "Sport". New Volkswagen will be globally available in three equipment lines "Bubble," "Design" and "Sport". Each of these versions is a very special character. In addition to individual markets themselves to emphasize certain points. Volkswagen has announced the presentation of individual parameters customization guide for journalists worldwide. In addition, three equipment lines, the Beetle can be customized with a wide range of optional characteristics. Overview of key features:

Bi-xenon headlights and LED daytime running lights. Volkswagen Beetle offers bi-xenon headlights for the first time. 15 LED module xenon headlights frame and outer perimeters, put daytime running lights and parking lights.

Sunroof. It is transparent and can be tilted or opened. Therefore, the correct name is: panoramic tilt / slide glass sunroof. Much more important: It is 80 percent higher (surface of glass) than the previous model. In addition, insulating glass blocks 99 percent of UV radiation and 92 percent of thermal energy.

Radio CD and radio navigation systems. The New Beetle is available exclusively with the radio-CD, which is specially designed for this model. No navigation was offered. Now, Volkswagen has a completely different approach, offering all those found in other ranges such as Golf, Jetta or Passat on the new VW Beetle so. Standard for the Beetle RCD 310 with 8 speakers, which is a very good sound system (including dual tuner). The summit is the RCD 510 audio system with CD changer, integrated interface to the screen SD card and touch. A great entry level radio-navigation system, the RNS 315 with 5-inch touchscreen (400 x 240 pixels), CD player, SD card reader and a dual tuner. The system model is superior radio-navigation NESS 510th It offers improvements such as a 6.5-inch touch screen, DVD player, voice control, SD card reader and 30 gigabytes.

Fender Premium Sound System. Does anyone know the world of rock music is familiar, such as the great Jimi Hendrix and Eric Clapton. The first player to Fender guitars, but it still does not. Now, the legendary U.S. producer of musical instruments and amplifiers - a joint venture with Panasonic - just to share their knowledge and the Volkswagen brand. The result is a voluntary system that Fender sound was offered a Volkswagen Beetle in multiple woofer and 400 watts of output power. Those opting for this audio system also get the interior lighting set the mood. In addition, indirect lighting, but also includes two rings of light around the boxes of the speakers on the doors. Europe, the Volkswagen Beetle is the first car audio system offers a Fender.

Keyless. Closure of access and keyless engine starting system appear in the first Volkswagen Beetle, it works without a door or ignition key. When a door handle is touched, the system detects a transmitter to obtain authorization with the person's jacket, pants or purse, then open the Beetle, and allows the engine starts with the button to start the engine. Volkswagen lock from the outside, is also activated second door handles touch, in this case, however, particularly marked in the surface is used.

All round safety. Let us focus. In Beetle, Volkswagen is building a car that is one of the safest in both active and passive safety. Naturally, the ESP electronic stability program are standard, which is an efficient network of six airbags that protect the cockpit. Naturally, the bodywork of the car - much of the laser-welded galvanized - an exhibition of the best values of torsional rigidity in the segment of 26,000 Nm / °. Naturally, because security is a fundamental quality in a Volkswagen.

Superior fuel economy of 40 mpg and 4.3 l/100 km: Engines

U.S. diesel with 140 hp. When it comes to engines, all signs point toward sustainability. United States, the VW Beetle is available as a turbo diesel for the first time. The Beetle 2.0 TDI (103 kW / 140 hp) complying with all emission limits of the United States and achieves 40 mpg fuel economy in the cycle of the highway is 29 mpg city and 33 mpg combined . Consequently, the Volkswagen Beetle is a good choice as one of the cars most fuel efficient in its class. In addition, Volkswagen has not only excellent fuel economy values in the version with a manual gearbox 6 speed, but also - and this is a start and technical Beetle - with transmission option clutch 6-speed double.

gasoline engines in the United States with 170 hp and 200 hp. fuel economy values are also improved 2.5-liter five-cylinder petrol, which was already a success of its predecessor. Moved manually VW Beetle is 22 mpg (city) 31 mpg (highway) and 25 mpg (combined). His counterpart is the 6-speed automatic transmission comes to 22 mpg (city) 29 mpg (highway) and 25 mpg (combined) - this means that up to 10 percent on fuel economy. Pioneer: up Beetle 2.0 TSI 147 kW / 200 hp to get the fuel economy of 25 mpg. High TSI is also available in optional 6-speed DSG.

motor of the world with 105 hp, 140 hp, 160 hp and 200 hp. In markets such as Asia, Australia, Europe and New Zealand, the new Volkswagen Beetle is offered exclusively with charged engines. All engine versions - all with four-cylinder - is used for the first time in this model series. Car shows significantly reduced levels of fuel consumption and emissions compared to the previous model, thanks to switch to turbo gasoline (TSI) and common rail direct injection turbodiesel (TDI). The three petrol engines Beetle loaded outputs 77 kW / 105 PS, 118 kW / 160 PS and 147 kW / 200 hp. The two diesel engine developing 77 kW / 105 PS and 103 kW / 140 PS (TDI engine is not offered in China). The five motors can be combined with a dual-clutch transmission as an option.

Engine with 160 hp and 200 hp in detail. Even fast-moving 225 kmh VW Beetle 2.0 TSI 200 hp consumes just 7.4 l/100 km (equivalent to 173 g / km of CO2) with a manual transmission. It is also very economical 160 hp 1.4 TSI offset by a 7-speed DSG, the beetle that consumes just 5.9 l/100 km (139 g / km of CO2). The data on the fuel economy of this type is the Beetle 1.4 TSI DSG (top speed: 207 km / h) a pleasant surprise in the motor program. In comparison, the previous model with 110 kW / 150 hp has a value of 8.9 l/100 km in the automatic version. Despite 10 hp more power, fuel consumption was reduced by 3.0 l/100 km, or 34 percent.

Differential lock on petrol. To ensure that the power of two stronger versions of the Volkswagen Beetle correct road very quickly approaching the curves, the models 160 hp (European version) and 200 hp (worldwide) will be factory installed XDS electronic differential lock . This system extends the functionality of a family EDS. XDS to improve the management and driving fast curve to calibrate the machine to a more "neutral", makes this an active braking to prevent wheel spin at the wheel landed inside the curve, and this improves the grip.

2012 Volkswagen Golf Cabriolet Review

As more than 680,000 units of VW convertibles built before the new Volkswagen Golf Cabriolet also features a classic soft top - that is, a cloth cover. Why steel mesh and not on the Eos? A look at the new model is indicative of a length of 4,246 mm, the Golf Cabriolet has a much more compact than the Eos 4423 mm long. Both vehicles were completely independent approaches to style, design and performance position.

The top of the Volkswagen Golf Cabriolet

Although the fabric used on the top of the Volkswagen Golf, a four-seater convertible is one of the quietest. Its soothing quiet ride thanks to the sophisticated design with the fabric roof and new windows, doors and seals. Wind noise at high frequencies above 5000 Hz is seen as a particularly annoying because they make it difficult to discuss the travel (articulation index). Volkswagen has examined the articulation index for an in-depth and evaluated the experiences of other vehicles. Results for: Golf Cabriolet convertible really sets new standards for sound.

The pavilion consists of a link, a headliner through the insulating layer of filling and cover. Perfection in daily practice: the development team designed the joints of the outer longitudinal joints tissues (central and two side panel) to serve as an additional channel. aerodynamic perfection, mounted between the longitudinal reinforcement of the link above for a total of four arches of the roof and across the bow in front is called the ceiling (the first member of the main cross behind the windshield frame). In turn, the bell is attached to the roof bows in the bands of tissue screw. Therefore, even at high speed, soft top is not filled with air. And this has a positive effect on aerodynamics.

When the roof is stored, the upper surface of the front cover of the arch covering the upper surface of the storage box. This eliminates the need for a separate envelope. The results: the highest standard fully automatic opening of electro-hydraulic (9.0 seconds), and the company (11.0 seconds) faster. Moreover, it is necessary to descend so deeply into the greater bootspace (250 liters with the roof up or down).

The summit is operated from a central switch in the center console. Opening and closing is even possible to run - at speeds up to 30 km / h. Two hydraulic pumps operated by a central switch to generate the necessary pressure. Even in this area has received special care to ensure the least possible noise generated, for example, the hydraulic unit is closed by the insulation. Unlocking and locking the Volkswagen Golf Cabriolet soft top is secured by a locking electromechanical. It works fully automatically. This means that no further manual opening or closing is necessary. The system detects, by 2 micro-switches, the roof is open or closed, and it informs the driver of the OK state by a beep and a visual message (in the multifunction display).

To ensure a good view behind the car, was the top of the heated rear glass window designed to be particularly important for a cabriolet, it is connected to the hood of what is known as high-frequency welding.

    Golf Cabriolet Safety

Rollover protection: Since 1979, when the first Volkswagen Golf Cabriolet was introduced, all generations of the models in this series had a roll bar. Should be, because in the early years of the Golf Cabrio automatic deployment of the protection of bearing systems had not been invented yet. When such systems first emerged in late 1980 that were hardly suitable for affordable car as a Golf Cabriolet. This changed in 2003, when Volkswagen introduced the New Beetle Cabriolet with ROPS can be done from behind the rear seats. The system was modified for the Eos, and - in the final stages of development - now is the protection of the occupants of the Volkswagen Golf Cabriolet too.

The protection element bearings used in the golf course behind the rear headrests in 0.25 seconds, the vehicle exceeds a preset angle or lateral acceleration. The system consists of two aluminum rolling modules and mobile aluminum is strained by a spring. The internal profile is maintained in its neutral position by a magnetic switch. When activated by the driver airbag in response to an impending rollover, the valve opens a first class maintenance and frees the internal profile. Although stops, sale of excess of gear runway extension fitted to the inner profile and prevents the internal profile of falling.

The highlight of the redesigned system Golf: 2 deployable units are designed for much smoother. For the first time Volkswagen convertible with the introduction of roll-over, it was possible through-loading, with a width of 526 mm and a height of 381 mm, including folding rear seat. At first it was just a pass through this area.

Council of reinforcements: the Golf Cabriolet offers maximum security with its system of protection against overturning, a reinforced windshield frame and many structural changes (bottom panels, side panels, railings, doors). Thanks to its numerous reinforcements, 4.25 meters long, 1.78 m wide (recharge) 1.42 meters Golf Cabriolet also features extreme torsional stiffness. Some of these reinforcements are visible when the convertible will be seen later, such as the Cabrio and a "normal" golf stands on a raised platform. In a visual comparison, the observer can see significant differences in the swing. In front, the convertible has an aluminum hood, with mounting brackets, which increases stiffness. In addition, the motor bracket, which acts as a vibration damper, adds sophistication to the front.

On either side of the car, 2 side reinforcements in the sill area and 2 diagonal front and rear, and common wire reinforced cradle to further increases in stiffness and a significant reduction of the vibration of the body resonance.

This is known as the static torsional stiffness coefficient reaches a value of more than 13,500 Nm per degree, the first torsional resonance frequency is above 17.5 Hz - first class for a convertible. And this rigidity, which is also a crucial factor in the stability and optimum driving comfort is remarkable journey. Meanwhile, the body protects against rust galvanized car.

Convertible airbags Specific protection systems completion Volkswagen Golf Cabriolet reinforcements to the front doors and side airbags and standard head-thorax. The latter is specially designed for a convertible, because it is of course possible to mount the head airbags in the roof surface. head-thorax airbags built into the sides of the issue, so use adjacent to any driver and front passenger height inside the Golf Cabriolet. A knee airbag standard has also been integrated into the driver's side. As part of the seat belt, airbag absorbs the energy of the pelvic region and legs, which leads to reduced occupant load. go further: Thank knee airbag, the driver is built in deceleration mode of the car before using the thigh and pelvis. It triggers the torso rotation precisely, so that the driver's air bag may come in contact with the support and the upper body at an optimum angle.

The knee airbag mode of operation shows the true complexity of the interconnection of security systems.

Styling for the VW Golf Cabriolet

The front end: front view, this convertible is a typical golf course. Although the Cabriolet is an even more sporty from this point of view, because the tapered windshield. In particular, a dynamic picture of the results of Convertible ordered with the optional bi-xenon headlamps. As before, the Eos, Golf Cabriolet differs from many other compact cars in a key aspect of it: windshield frame is pleasantly short, optimizing convertible feeling. In addition, the Volkswagen Golf Cabriolet offers the largest internal length of the class. Guests Behind the special message of 833 millimeters in the legs effectively.

Like the design applied in Eos, the activation switch is built in the center console between the driver's and passenger. features redesigned the rear seat and seat cushion materials. Golf Cabriolet also has a convenient Easy Entry front seats as standard, making it easier for rear passengers enter and exit the car.

There is a hand bag hooks in side panels of the shoe of 250 liters, which is located just off the hooks are mechanisms to lock remotely registration division 50:50 folding rear seat. When the folder is folded, thereby increasing the additional storage capacity through the grand opening of pass-through.

    The democratization of convertibility

In 1979, Volkswagen had already been opened to drive the democratization of the VW Golf Cabriolet. Paving the way for the democratic movement, thirty years ago, it was Beetle Convertible. New Golf Cabriolet reflect this philosophy. Another aspect of the link to his legendary predecessor, also remove it from the confines of the classroom. Oh, and try to understand the drivers of the bank balance of a man or woman really a waste of time.

    sustainable performance is possible

6, direct injection turbo is ideal for a cruise with a convertible. They cover a power range from 77 kW / 105 hp to 155 kW / 210 hp. Also fun is the fuel for fast, efficient transport of high-tech dual-clutch (DSG), which is available with four engines. Gasoline engines (TSI) and two diesel (TDI) will be available for energy-saving BlueMotion technology (regeneration of the battery and start / stop systems.) Illustrating the effectiveness using the new Volkswagen Golf is the fuel Cabriolet 105 hp 1.6 TDI BlueMotion technology: offers a combined fuel consumption of just 4.4 litres/100 km (equal to 117 g / km of CO2).

    1.2 TSI of 77 kW / 105 PS

The turbocharged 1.2-liter four-cylinder comply with reductions ITS principle with only 1197 cm3. It offers maximum power with minimum consumption. The Technology package BlueMotion option is available in this version Volkswagen Golf Cabriolet. / KW 77 / 105 hp Cabrio accelerates from zero to 100 km / h in 11.7 seconds. Top speed is 188 km / h. This contrasts with the fuel economy and emission values, which sets standards for open trucks with gasoline engines: 5.9 l/100 (139 g / km CO2) in the standard version, or 5 , 7 l/100 km and 132 g / km of CO2 BlueMotion technology. The 1.2 TSI outputs its maximum power at 5000 rpm. Its maximum torque of 175 Newton meters available between 1,550 and 4,100 rpm. The 1.2 TSI comes with a manual transmission 6-speed standard.

    1.4 TSI 90 kW / 122 PS

The next level of power, the new Golf Cabriolet controls operate effectively 1.4 liter TSI with 90 kW / 122 hp (at 5000 rpm). This engine can be combined with the optional 7-speed kaksoiskytkimellä. Both versions follow this fall. four-cylinder engine develops a maximum torque of 200 Nm between 1500 and 4000 rpm. (All fuel economy and performance data Golf Cabriolet 1.4 TSI with 122 PS values projected in this press release.)

With a combined fuel consumption of 6.4 litres/100 km (equal to 149 g / km of CO2), the turbo engine makes the convertible with a manual transmission for fuel efficient cars in its class power. The TSI of 122 hp can reach a top speed of 197 km / h. This includes the classic Golf Cabriolet 0-100 km / h in 10.5 seconds. Driving performance is the same version DSG, combined fuel consumption is even better than the 6.3 liters per 100 km (147 g / km of CO2).

    1.4 TSI with 118 kW / 160 hp

The Twincharger of 118 kW / 160 hp (at 5800 rpm), which is reinforced by both the turbocharger and compressor can also be combined with a 7-speed DSG gearbox. It is also fuel efficient than the small 1.4 TSI. fuel consumption combined with a manual transmission is 6.4 L/100 km (including 150 g / km CO2), and it passes by DSG, fuel consumption is reduced to 6.3 l/100 km (148 g / km CO2). TSI develops a maximum torque of 240 Nm between 1,500 and 4,500 rpm. In both versions of transmission, when the Volkswagen Golf Cabriolet with this engine 100 kmh in 8.4 seconds and its top speed is 216 km / h.

    2.0 TSI 155 kW / 210 hp

The maximum power, the Golf Cabriolet is to drive 155 kW / 210 PS (at 5300 rpm) TSI. In this case, the engine power increases the front wheels through a 6-speed DSG gearbox is standard. And it does so much fuel, even more power: 100 km to the consumes 7.5 liters (equivalent to 175 g / km CO2), which is directly injected with up to 280 Nm (from 1700 rpm min) high torque engine with 16 valves. However, reaching a top speed of 235 km / h. The Golf Cabriolet 2.0 TSI covers the sprint to 100 km / h in 7.3 seconds. (All information on fuel economy and performance on the Volkswagen Golf Cabriolet 2.0 TSI in this press release is expected values, because this version is also in late autumn.)

    1.6 TDI 77 kW / 105 hp

TDI input for the program is offered by the pair of 1.6-liter four-cylinder with 77 kW / 105 hp (4400 rpm) and peak of 250 Newton-meters (1500-2500 rpm). Optionally, this version can be equipped with TDI BlueMotion technology (TMO) package (start / stop system and regenerative battery). The combined fuel consumption technology Cabriolet 1.6 TDI BlueMotion Golf is just 4.4 litres/100 km (equal to 117 g / km of CO2). The corresponding values are of 4.8 litres/100 without BMT and 125 g / km of CO2. In each case, the convertible Golf Cabriolet 1.6 TDI is more fuel-efficient Volkswagen ever. Both versions reach 100 km / h speed record at 12.1 seconds and top speed is 188 km / h.

    2.0 TDI 103 kW / 140 PS

The most powerful TDI common rail of the Golf Cabriolet is an engine of 1968 cm3 four-cylinder with 103 kW / 140 hp (at 4,200 rpm), which is combined with the TDI BlueMotion technology package as standard. Engine to be introduced this fall will be available with 6-speed DSG option.

From a small 1750 RPM, TDI develops 320 Nm of torque (up to 2500 rpm). These key performance requirements for a four-cylinder engine accelerates the VW Golf Cabriolet is 100 km / h in just 9.9 seconds and a top speed of 207 km / h. For maximum speed DSG version is slightly below 205 km / h. As expected, the combined fuel economy of Golf Cabriolet 2.0 TDI is abnormally low: 4.5 l/100 km with manual transmission, 5.1-liter version of the DSG. CO2 levels are equivalent to 119 g / km and 134 g / km (DSG). (All fuel economy and performance data Golf Cabriolet 2.0 TDI in this press release is projected values, because this version is also in late autumn.)

    BlueMotion Technologies in detail

Stop / Start system: the driver approaches a red light, the Volkswagen Golf Cabrio brakes to a stop, the change in neutral and take your foot off the clutch (DSG, simply press the brake pedal). This causes the motor to momentarily cut off. In the multifunction display the text "start (A) Stop." When the light turns green again, the driver presses the clutch (DSG or just press the brake), and the engine starts, the start button (A) Stop the text is cleared, the driver makes a speed and resumes driving. Essentially, the driver had no need for additional operational steps for a conventional car, saving you even up to 0.2 l/100 km in the city by pressing Stop / Start system.

Contrary to vehicles without the system of Stop / Start technology BlueMotion models have an additional battery information form (to obtain the instantaneous state of the battery), the heavy engine starting, the DC / DC converter (ensures voltage stability of power system the vehicle) and durability of a deep cycle battery with fiberglass mat board.

battery regeneration: regeneration can use the energy expended in the direction that the ideal as possible. During inertia and braking phases of Golf Cabriolet - that is, when the driver releases the accelerator pedal or the brakes - the system increases the voltage of the alternator (generator), and this electricity is used to bulk load the vehicle battery. Thanks to the control of the alternator according to the efficiency of the engine and the battery charged for optimum results, the alternator voltage can be reduced whenever it's convenient - such as when accelerating or permanently to maintain the desired speed. The generator, you can even cut altogether. This relieves the load on the engine, reducing fuel consumption. In addition, the battery - always ideally positions - provides vehicle electrical system with enough power during the engine stop (eg traffic lights).

regeneration of the battery requires special software for energy management and editing software for motor control.

    6-speed and 7 speed

Outside of the TSI and TDI 77 kW / 105 hp, all other drivers of the new Golf Cabriolet are combined with a dual-clutch transmission (DSG). It is either a 6-speed DSG or 7-speed, depending on engine torque. Both versions are characterized by DSG maximum economy and the changing dynamics, which has never been done on this scale before. In addition to having a different number of forward gears, a second way of DSG systems vary technically their mating types. While the two dry clutches used in the 7-speed DSG gearbox, dual clutch 6-speed DSG runs wet in a bath of oil. Applies to both transmission: even the most experienced professional drivers are not changed in nearly the speed DSG versions. More than any other automatically, have the gearbox with double clutch the potential to reduce emissions and fuel consumption, therefore. Compared to an automatic torque converter, the efficiencies of fuel to be as much as 20 percent, depending on the engine.

History in the first Gulf cabriolet

Here's something that nobody knows: the first "Generation I" prototype VW Golf Cabriolet - the new Golf Cabriolet - had not fixed roll bars is sufficient reason for a brief historical overview and examine more closely the first prototype. 1970. chaise was created Karmann in Osnabrück. Today, plants owned by Volkswagen. So, like all previous generations, the new Golf Cabriolet again be manufactured in Osnabrück.

Leap back in time: Golf has been a fantastic start in 1974 and 1976 has been extended to model the composition of the GTI, which later became a legendary and revolutionary diesel model. That same year, it became clear that the Golf would be a storm the last bastion of the Beetle - like the convertible version. "As soon as it emerged Golf, Volkswagen Karmann has begun negotiations with some countries developing prototype cabriolet. At the same time, Volkswagen has started the research work," says Anton Konrad, who was director of public relations for Volkswagen that time. Cabriolet is based on a compact? Although part of a four-seater cabriolet was as good as dead in Europe since the year 1960? This was not really a dangerous gamble, but it was a logical step, according to Klaus Bischoff, Director of Planning Volkswagen today: "Only the best cars that stand out are the masses of possible candidates for convertibles.

And that's why I Golf - at that time the most expressive Volkswagen - had the power to breathe new life into the segment. "

In December 1976 the first prototype was created Karmann, is designed for this purpose. White Cabriolet was angled bootlid and the sedan, its cornerstone was famous for the C-pillar crease wrote Giorgio Giugiaro, designer of the first Golf. . Unlike the Beetle Cabriolet, the windshield and the triangular window, even the base model here, finally, the convertible golf had to be sold at an affordable price, "says Rüdiger Folten, member of the Volkswagen design team since 1973 without a roof sure, the prototype A1C. - Codename interior of the car - displayed all the key features of the Golf.

Mechanical design of the top of the stack much more solidly a short rear - but the price is justifiable only prototypes. This is due to a large glass rear window is mounted along the bottom, hinges and simply folds inside when the roof is low. back side windows can be lowered completely, and cut a very fine chrome surround their elbow when it is completely up. Yet all these elements are only half of the Member to the function, which then gave the production model of its nickname: "handle" is the "basket of strawberries" is missing.

So how has hoop make its way into the production model later? Konrad Anton gives the answer: ".. At the time, the safety of vehicles on a leading Volkswagen Our development manager at the time, Professor Ernst Fiala, later became known as" Pope security ", he insisted that the bar is installed and partly with an eye toward future legislation in the United States."

Of course, without stabilizer bar prototype has an interesting secret hidden behind the rear trim panels are strong threaded connections for mounting a cage, since the beginning of the tests were conducted in both versions, and end with a modified version an arc prevailed. When the first models emerged from the assembly line in Osnabruck in June 1979, the convertible looked like it was thrown into a single mold: he had a roof design with smooth yet developed fabric layer 5 lined up, a appeal on its surface good back, and offered a lot of fun with a size of 4 outdoor seating at an affordable price. At the same time, has continued to build Karmann Beetle about 6 months. This is because when the news of his imminent demise was a time, there was a significant increase in orders. "The community Beetle even met in a funeral procession in Wolfsburg," says Anton Konrad.

He sent a hot dog stand at the demonstrators at the place of safety facilities, and invited the spokesperson for the Friends test drive a Beetle in the Volkswagen Golf Cabrio. In a nutshell: "I was surprised at how much more advanced technically, was his beloved Beetle.

The rest is history: the Golf Cabriolet has been a success worldwide, with total sales of 388,522. And when he was replaced by the Golf Cabrio III (1993), discussions on the stabilizer bar has adopted a new tone. The fact is that the "handful" had long since gone from being a nuisance to an aesthetic style - and the open bar prototype-roll remains on the drawing board. Until March 1, 2011. It was then presented the new Volkswagen Golf Cabriolet at the Geneva Motor Show - no safety bar automatic deployment modules bearing protection. And if you want, ennobled the prototype of the first prototype VW Golf Cabrio age 35.
