ASMA Designs - Sweet Grillz

I think these pictures speak for themselves. I can sorta understand the CLS, being a sportier E-Class. But there's no excuse for a ricey S-Class with the biggest grille this side of a Lincoln.

Aerodynamic + Hummer H1 = Oxymoron

I think this belongs in the catergory of "kill it with fire". It's a Hummer H1. Does it really need to go aero? What kind of mileage savings are you really expecting when your truck weighs about 5 tonnes and is motivated by an engine displacing over 6 Litres? Also, why go through all the trouble when your windshield still has the aerodynamics of a brick?

The front end looks vaguely familiar to me... I think it's a cross between an Argo and an Austin Allegro.

Frem F1

The Frem F1 is Lebanon's first supercar. And possibly the reason they've never had one before. Because it's fugly.

It's kind of Ferrari Enzo meets Batmobile meets ugly stick. With interior by Fisher Price (it kind of looks like it's made of foam).

New Lincoln and the MKT

Lincoln’s wing grille is indeed unique. I'll give it that. It looks ok in some applications, like on the MKS, and in my opinion in it's latest iteration on the MKX. The problem is it looks like too many other things as well, not necessarily attractive.

The cow catcher on an old-timey train for one. The baleen filled maw of a right whale for another.

The MKX deserves mention as well on it’s own fugly accord (ignoring the family resemblance), due to it’s weird window kickup that serves only to prevent the small children – the only people who can fit in the third row due to the severe rake of the rear window – from seeing out of the car. That rake also makes the car look more blobby than sleek. Not to mention that the backwards slant to the rear plus the high mounted and narrow tails make the ass end look unnaturally large. Viewed straight on from behind it looks tall and top heavy due to the acres of unadorned sheet metal.

Plus the thing looks gigantic. The tiny headlights in combo with the huge grille, plus the fact that the thing looks about 2 miles long make for a very heavy looking vehicle. “Whale” is a very fitting description for this car in fact. In the picture below, it almost looks like they had to use a wide-angle lens just to capture the car. 3/4 angles make the car look as if it's being contorted through fun-house mirrors.

And what’s with Lincoln’s new naming structure, anyway? MKX, MKS, MKZ, MKT… When you hear one of those names, does the image of the car it belongs to automatically pop into your head? I know it doesn’t for me. In fact, when ever I write about these cars I have to back search to find out that I’m calling the car the right name. I always think MKZ is the MKS, as the letter Z in my mind should signify the largest/best offering since it’s the last letter in the alphabet. And yes, technically MKX is a good name for a crossover as X is a cross, but what happens when you have two? A name should hold enough meaning to gain some kind of recall with their clients. At least alphanumeric names make a slight bit of sense, given that the larger a number usually the larger and/or more powerful a car is.

MINI COUNTRYMAN GOES OFF-ROAD

Two weeks ago MINI unveiled a fourth model range for its lineup. The MINI Countryman range represents the brand’s first foray into the sub-compact SUV market. Typical of the current BMW Group, styling will definitely polarise. It stands higher off the ground than a normal hatch, Clubman or convertible.
MINI has installed the MINI ALL4 all-wheel-drive (AWD) system which should at least help the car through mild gravel, if not some slippery mud. Dynamic Stability Control (DSC) and ABS are part of this solution, and so is Servotronic steering. Runflat tyres are the norm at MINI and the Countryman benefits from their stability and safety qualities. They range from 16-inch to 19-inch in size.

Depending on the market the sitting arrangement can either be the standard four-seat layout or a three-seat rear bench can be added optionally at no cost.

Interior features include air conditioning and a CD player, while optional extras that can be ticked off on the menu include iPod integration, a large panoramic sunroof, adaptive headlights, satellite navigation and a heated windscreen.

The South African market should get two models; a baseline Cooper Countryman and a Cooper S Countryman. The former has the trusty 1.6-litre naturally aspirated engine that produces a slightly higher 90kW at 6000rpm and 160Nm of torque at 4250rpm. It is said that its 0 – 100km/h sprint time is 10.5 seconds while top speed is 190km/h. MINI claims an average 6.1 litres/100km and a C02 emissions rating of 142 g/km.

On the upper end is a turbocharged 1.6-litre worth 135kW at 5500rpm and peak torque of 240Nm at 1600rpm. An overboost function (activated during actions like overtaking) will take this number up to 260Nm. The 0 – 100km/h acceleration time is claimed at 7.6 seconds and top speed peaks at 215km/h. The average fuel consumption is 6.3l/100km, equating to a C02 rating of 146g/km. Who knows, there could be a John Cooper Works model making about 160kW in the pipeline.
