Durban will soon boast 188 new buses - all supplied by Mercedes-Benz in a deal worth close to R200-million - in its public transport system.
One hundred and seventy of the vehicles, a mixture of OF 1722 and OM 1725 models, are full sized 65-seater buses while the balance is 27-seater midi buses (LO 915 models) for the popular but aging inner city Mynah service.
The deal was clinched by Mercedes-Benz Commercial Vehicles sales executive in Durban, Dave Needham, who said 120 of the full-sized buses had already been delivered to Remant Alton, the company which runs Durban's bus transport system. "The other 50 should be handed over by the end of June."
Further orders for Mynah buses will be made once Durban's new Inner City Public Transport System is finalised. The new Mynah buses are all white in colour with the Mynah bird logo on them. Buses in the current Mynah fleet are blue.
