Workers affiliated with the National Union of Metal Workers of South Africa (NUMSA) will return to their posts and workplaces next Monday following two weeks of strike action. The guys who include workers in the motor manufacturing industry and petrol attendants, will stop striking and go back to earning money.
This after the union reached an agreement with the Retail Motor Industry (RMI) and other employer representatives on wage issues. An increase of 10% for petrol attendants was agreed on, as well as a 9% wage boost for the rest of the workers. According to NUMSA, employers raised a number of problems associated with increasing wages, including above-inflation wage demands, the recent recession and a generally-smaller automotive market.
Motor manufacturers which were affected include Volkswagen, Mercedes-Benz and General Motors.
